Aetolians in Varkana
Aetolians in Varkana form the second largest minority population in the country after Vasari people. At the 2016 national census they consisted of 1,018,220 people who declared Aetolian as their mother tongue, or 2.8% of the total population. They may be Varkan citizens or non-citizen immigrants. A 2015 study published by Senaki University estimates that over 53% of Varkan people have "some form of Aetolian ancestry".
As of 2020, there were 712,983 Aetolian citizens residing in Varkana, representing 17.2% of all foreign-born residents.
Only two communes have Aetolian as a co-official language alongside Varkan: Balisi and Rekovilos. The two communes are located in Eastern Varkana and directly border Aetolia along the Sinora River. Other than these two, the Greater Vani Area has a sizeable Aetolian population as well as the Greater Gali Area due to their urban links with neighboring Aetolian cities across the Sinora.
