Zazashi (Varkan: ზაზაში) is a Varkan talk show broadcast on STV 1 every Sunday evening, presented and produced by Zaza Ivanishvili. He is famous for turning any conversation around for the positive, and is known to change the color of his lips, hair, and eyelids for every new season of his show. While hosting, he always wears a midnight blue suit with small lightbulbs decorating it. The program is taped at the ??? in Klow and airs live to tape in Varkana at 8:00 PM.

Format

The show features guests who are making news at the moment, including actors, writers, singers, politicians and athletes. Guests discuss their life and engage in interviews. The show gradually acquired a provocative reputation, notably since the host does not hesitate to ask political guests questions about their private lives.

At the beginning of an episode, Zaza Ivanishvili presents with humor "those who couldn't make it tonight", in other words the public figures who couldn't come to the shooting or refused the invitation but were involved in the week's current events. After that sequence, a guest is invited on set for the talk show. Guests can decide to stay or leave the set after their one-on-one interview with the host, often deciding to stay and participate in games or other activities organized by Ivanishvili.

Controversies

2003-2009

During the first episode of the show, Giorgi Latso, then Minister of Finance had a heated debate with the president of the VABO 30, Levan Jamburia who accused the AAP of "destroying Varkan businesses". Latso calmly retorted that capitalism in Varkana as a socioeconomic system had always been self-destructive and prone to abuses, and the AAP was simply "protecting workers". Latso then openly questioned Jamburia's credentials for the role of president of VABO 30, calling him "deluded and naive".

2010

In 2010, President Zurab Avalishvili was invited to discuss the success of the electrification of ground transport in Varkana. He had a heated debate with guest Sopo Zibzibadze over the plan, eventually declaring she could "go drown herself in Burawi oil" if she wanted gasoline so bad.

2011

Presidential campaign

During the campaign, Marianna Bajusz was invited to talk about her new TV series which debuted on 15 September 2011. Instead of asking questions about the TV series and her work, Ivanishvili kept turning the questions around her husband Giorgi Latso and his presidential campaign and her role in it. Bajusz refused to answer the questions and promptly left the set when she got fed up with Ivanishvili's pestering. Ivanishvili later apologized for his actions and invited Bajusz again for an interview after the election, which she accepted.

2012-2014

In December 2014, President Giorgi Latso's participation during Episode 565 generates controversy as Ivanishvili questionned him over the Varkan chemical weapons program. During the episode, Latso lost his cool and at one point referred to fellow guest Evgeni Kharadze with ra gaat’rak’a am k’atsma (რა გაატრაკა ამ კაცმა; literally "What a pain in the ass that guy is") after the latter kept repeating the same accusation over and over.

2015

Presidential campaign

During the presidential campaign, Ivanishvili has been accused of ridiculing guest and presidential candidate Gia Sotkilava during the live debate he hosted.

2016

In 2016, Councilor Aleko Bregvadze admits during his one-on-one interview with Ivanishvili that he held money in off-shore accounts, prompting the GGD to investigate. Two months later, he was arrested for tax evasion and the Council of Ten continued its duties with only nine members until 1 January 2017 when Zakharia Arakishvili replaced Bregvadze as Councilor for Kaspi University.

2017

In February 2017, Varkan comedian Juansher Gabashvili was forcibly removed from the set during an appearance on Zazashi, after repeatedly touching guest Nino Basharuli to her visible discomfort. Ivanishvili called in his security guards who assisted as Ivanishvili and guest President Giorgi Latso dragged Gabashvili off by his legs. Ivanishvili later said "Juansher did a segment, he was a little out of it. [When Nino] came out, he wanted a big, wet kiss. It was time for Juansher to go, so I escorted him out by his feet." Ivanishvili added, "He always makes me a little uncomfortable, you have no idea what he's going to do next." Ivanishvili also said he had spoken to Basharuli afterwards and that Basharuli was not upset about the incident. Latso commented Gabashvili was "likely being investigated" and that his behavior was "completely inappropriate." Latso's comments ended up foreshadowing Gabashvili's arrest for sexual assault in September 2017. He was condemned in early 2018 and sentenced to life in prison.

2018

In November 2018, Ivanishvili came under criticism for allegedly trivializing mental disorders when guest Ilia Tsereteli appeared on Zazashi. Tsereteli suffers from Tourettes and exhibited tics during his one-on-one interview, one of which caused Ivanishvili to laugh at him and encouraging other guests to laugh at the tics saying it was "better to laugh than to cry".

2019

In May 2019, while promoting his new film Wolf and Tiger, Markos Vasdekis appeared on Zazashi and generated controversy when he engaged in an argument with fellow guest Davit Lamazi who mocked Vasdekis for not doing his own stunts. Vasdekis called Lamazi a "ghebri" (literally "Jewish pig"), a Varkan slur against Jews. Vasdekis later apologized during the show, but Lamazi said he was not offended.

In June 2019, Pipa appeared on the show to talk about her feature on Z-pop group Hiakhunang's single "Küss und Versöhnen". She detailed the complexity of collaborating with a IK Unterhaltung group compared to JYP Unterhaltung, referring to her previous collaboration with band Tag6. She encouraged Hiakhunang to switch agency to JYP when their contract runs out in 2021 and called IK's founder Iang Huensiah "gross and creepy", adding he was using Hiakhunang as his "cash cow" to the detriment of other artists with the agency. She detailed their meeting, claiming he fetishized her for her whiteness and youth, and suggested she join his agency. She also claimed he used homophobic slurs to refer to her and Rosa, and only allowed the collaboration between the group and her because of sheer financial opportunism.
