Early life and career

Asatiani was born in Senaki, Varkana. His father, Giorgi Kvernadze, is a former national chess player, and small business owner. His mother, Macha Asatiani, is a psychologist. Asatiani grew up in Senaki with his two younger siblings. He graduated from secondary school in the same commune, and then went on to graduate in computer science from Senaki University in 2003, where he became close friends with Irma Borodin. He then studied History at the same university, earning a master's degree, writing his thesis about Aetolian military strategy.

He worked for nine years in the Varkan military industry as a computer analyst and developer, publishing along the way a few books about modern military strategies.

Secretary of Defense

In 2012, Asatiani accepted an appointment by President Giorgi Latso as Secretary of Defense. His first major decision as secretary was to create the Cyber Forces, stressing the need for the military to be able to fight against cyber threats.

Asatiani is responsible for several military reforms in the Land Forces, including the abandonment of assault rifles, the phase-out of a significant portion of tanks, the purchase of additional armored personnel carriers, and the replacement of all former multiple rocket launchers by the RS-122. These high-profile changes in equipment came with heavy criticism from part of the military, while it was praised by several military strategists and analysts. Asatiani explained his reasoning by the reduced costs his reforms would generate, insisting on the uselessness of assault rifles in modern combat compared to practical small and light pistols which "can do just as much damage with proper training, and we'll work on that." He also argued that tank warfare was mostly outdated, citing several documents explaining how technologically it was easier to develop more efficient and cost-effective ways to destroy tanks than it was to better armor them against attacks. "Modern land warfare is all about mobility and speed, whereas heavy tanks hardly fight anymore in modern conflicts, and well-equipped IMVs can outmatch tanks most of the time," he added before concluding by saying: "tanks are still very useful against other tanks, though."

In the Air Force, Asatiani ordered Anka and Hermes 900 UAVs for multiple purposes. In 2014, a further 60 Gripens from the modified E class was orders with the first plane to join the Air Force in 2018. In April 2014, Asatiani proposed another 10 fighters making the total order of 70 planes.

In May 2015, Asatiani announced his long-term plans to merge the Naval Forces into the Coast Guard by 2020, which was supported by most political parties.
