Aero SM (Aetolian: Aέρω; Varkan: აერო; literally "air") a Varkano-Aetolian aircraft manufacturer headquartered on the grounds of Borjomi International Airport in Borjomi, Central Varkana. It is notable for producing the L-29 Maia, L-39 Albatros, and the L-159 Alca military light combat jets. Currently, Aero produces the Aero 42 and Aero 72 turboprop regional airliners, center wing box for the Alenia C27, door subassemblies for the EmAe 170 and EmAe 190, gun bay doors for the Saab JAS 39 Gripen, subassemblies and parts for the Aikok A320 family, the L-159 advanced light combat aircraft and the Aero 146E hybrid-electric passenger jet.

History

In the 1950s, Aero started developing the Aero L-29 Maia.

In the 1960s, Aero started developing the Aero L-39 Albatros.

In 1981, Aero was partly privatized by the government of Varkana, which retained a 50% stake in the company through the National Investment Fund of Varkana. ??? of Aetolia acquired the other 50% stakes. The Aero 42, equipped with PW120 engines, made its maiden flight on August 16, 1984. The Aero 72 was launched on January 15, 1986.

In 1992, Aero acquired the production and naming rights of the Beron Aerospaciales 146. The company produced new variants of the 146 with updated engines and avionics as the Aero 146A, Aero 146B and Aero 146G. Under the deal, Aero continued to build the regional airliner in Volisania. Production of the Aero 146 ended with the final four aircraft being delivered in late 2003.

In 1997, the Aero L-159 Alca's maiden flight occurred. 10 April 2000 marked the first delivery of L-159A to the Varkan Air Force.

Manufacturing

AETOLIAN's manufacturing facilities in AETOLIAN CITY, near AETOLIAN LARGE CITY, produce the aircraft's fuselage and tail sections. Aircraft wings are assembled in Borjomi in Central Varkana. Final assembly, flight-testing, certification and deliveries are the responsibility of Aero in Borjomi.
